The Mascot Debacle of 1995 Part 2 | Part 1

Principal: I understand that this is a big game, but we can’t let either of you guys go.

Cheerleading Coach: Spencer, we don’t want either one of you to get hurt.

Me: We aren’t going to get hurt, there were only like 25 people at the game.

The girl who was the other mascot: Spencer, I don’t think it’s a good idea.

Me: I guess I don’t have a choice, but this is not my fault How was I supposed to know.

Principal: We are not saying it is your fault, we just can’t have you guys get hurt. You can still go to the game and sit in the regular student section.  I already talked with the other principal and we won’t be sending a mascot to any of the Alta events for the rest of the year.

Me: Are you kidding?

Cheerleading Coach: Spencer, you didn’t see what happened, trust us, it wasn’t good.

I was there; I just didn’t see it because I was in the Bruin costume.

It was a big game.  Both teams were coming off of deep playoff runs the year prior, and each had up and coming Juniors that would shine their seniors years in Travis Hansen and Nate Knight. The Gym was packed. I remember changing in the boy’s locker room, and you could hear the band and crowd getting amped up 30 minutes before game time.

This was before Snapchat, Instagram, Netflix, and Prime Video. A lot of people went to the games on Friday night; it was just what you did.

A student I didn’t know, walked into the locker room and asked me if he could get dressed. I Instantly knew who he was. He was the Alta Hawk, well the student that was inside the Alta Hawk. I don’t remember his name; I wish I did. I want to apologize for my terrible Idea.

We talked for a few minutes, and I asked him if would be willing to play fight during halftime.  He loved the idea. We spent a few minutes talking about what It would look like and how we would start with a dance battle and then get into each other’s faces and then walk away at that point.

Honestly, I don’t remember who won the game or what happened before halftime.

At halftime, the two of us were standing on opposite sides of the gym while the cheerleaders did their halftime act. I jumped in at the end to get the crowd psyched up; we probably threw out candy or shirts or mini basketballs or something like that.

Then the Alta Hawk walked on the floor.

Part 3 this weekend.
